Hi, I’m Dr Shirley Chen
Dr Shirley Chen (she/her) is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG). I am a calm and empathetic female obstetrician and gynaecologist who takes the time to listen and offer the most up-to-date treatment options to my patients. I am experienced in all areas of gynaecological practice but have special interest in endometriosis, menstrual disorders, fibroids and ovarian cysts.
I work hard to deliver excellence in care and am able to provide a wide range of medical and surgical options, with a focus on minimally invasive techniques to ensure my patients recover as quickly as possible. I understand that everyone has different needs and I tailor your treatment to your individual circumstances. I believe in the importance of shared decision making and want to ensure that you feel comfortable with the treatment option that reflects what matters to you.
I studied medicine and surgery at the University of New South Wales and completed my specialist training through John Hunter, Maitland, Liverpool, Campbelltown and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals. I hold additional qualifications in a Master of Reproductive Medicine and Certificate in Clinical Teaching and Supervision. I have extensive experience in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery having undertaken further postgraduate Fellowship with the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery Society (AGES).
I am dedicated to keeping abreast of the latest research and evidence through participation in clinical teaching and conferences. I have presented at national and international conferences on a wide range of topics relating to women’s health and brings a clear, warm communication style in to the consultation room.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching and sharing my knowledge and skills with medical students and junior doctors. I am a Conjoint Lecturer with the University of Newcastle and a RANZCOG Training Supervisor at John Hunter Hospital.
I am happily settled in Newcastle with my husband and book-loving toddler. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors with our dog.
I am able to consult in English and Mandarin/Chinese.
I look forward to meeting you on your journey for compassionate and holistic health care.
